Project Phases Methods

This work has been conducted in three major phases. The first phase was to build a national database on NOM and raw water quality. This was done by personal interviews and extensive data sharing with water utilities throughout the country as we ll as mining national water data clearinghouses for TOC. After analyzing this large dataset utilities were selected to participate in phase II of the research. In phase II representative utilities were selected and asked to collect raw water samples to be analyzed for TOC and DBP-FP. These data, when combined with the results of phase I will be used to summarize trends over time and space in DBPFP using statistical and GIS analysis. Initial modeling based on raw water, land use, hydrology and historical data we have begun to provide insight into TOC sources, degradation processes and impacts of land use and management practices on TOC. It is this data and information that will be combined with the gathered DBPFP and used in phase III to provide general guidance and best management practices for utilities interested in NOM control.
