Problem Statement

According to the United States Geological Survey each person uses about 80-100 gallons of water per day for indoor home uses. Based on the data from the census, the United States population is about 330 million people, so up to 33 billion gallons of water is used daily in households. From Consumer Reports, water prices have risen close to 80% in the past decade. Since water is a valuable resource, we should put in our best effort to conserve water. Nevertheless, a water meter only provides homeowners with the total water consumption which does not help them learn the fraction that each water outlet contributes to the overall consumption. The difficulty for homeowners to identify the fraction that each outlet contributes to the overall water consumption can potentially discourage them to put in effort to save water.
