Using Putty to log in to vlsicad.ecs.umass.edu
These instructions explain how to
log in to vlsicad.ecs.umass.edu using putty/Xming on the machines in the ECS
labs.
Step 1.
Open
the folder called "Terminal Emulation"
Step 2.
The
folder contains the following programs for remote access of the tools:
a.
Putty: This is a terminal program to run commands
remotely on the machine vlsicad.ecs.umass.edu
b.
WinSCP: This is a remote file transfer client to
transfer files to and from vlsicad.
c.
Xming: Is
the X-Windows system for Linux. It is used to view the tool GUI.
Step 3.
Start
Xming server by double clicking on the Icon. You will see the icon for Xming
server on bottom right of the desktop. It shows that Xming has started.
Step 4.
Start
putty and you will get a menu:
a.
In
the "Host Name (or IP address)" field type "vlsicad1.ecs.umass.edu" or "vlsicad2.ecs.umass.edu" based on your server assignment.
b.
Select "SSH" in the "Connection Type"
Step 5.
Expand
the "+ SSH" icon at the bottom left and select X11
setup.
a.
In
the X11 setup set the "Enable X11 forwarding"
Step 6.
Go
back to the Session menu.
a.
Give the current session a name
in the "Saved Sessions" dialog box.
b.
Press save to save the session
and the name will be listed in the saved session list
c.
Press
Open to open the terminal window.
Step 7.
A window will open:
a.
Type
your user id at the command prompt
b.
Type
the password and press enter
Finally
you will log in to vlsicad
