UMass Clean Energy Extension Develops Case Studies on Energy Efficiency Successes in Green Communities Program

Through the UMass Clean Energy Extension, we are working with the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources in support of the Green Communities program. One of the five criteria to earn designation as a Green Community is to develop a five year plan to reduce municipal energy use by 20%. We developed case studies on the seven cities and towns that have achieved the 20% reduction to date:
This diverse group of cities and towns were designated as Green Communities in 2010 and 2011, the first two years of the program. Some had already implemented measures to reduce municipal energy consumption before the program began, while others got started with the support of Green Communities grants. As described in these case studies, the communities took varied approaches to reducing their energy consumption. These efforts resulted in annual energy cost savings ranging from $55,000 to $1.4 million.
As of December 2015, 155 communities, nearly half of the cities and towns in Massachusetts, have been designated by DOER as Green Communities. For information on becoming a Green Community and qualifying for grants, see this page.
UMass Clean Energy Extension Hires Dwayne Breger to Serve as Director

Dwayne Breger was hired as the Director of the new UMass Clean Energy Extension. Dwayne comes to UMass after 13 years as the Director of the Renewable Energy Division at the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER). At DOER, he was responsible for the state Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), the development of the RPS Solar Carve-Out and solar loan program, the advance of biomass energy policy, and served on the staff working group that designed the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. Dwayne returns to the UMass campus where he received his Ph.D. in Resource Economics and served as a Senior Research Associate in Mechanical Engineering between 1988 and 1994. Prior to DOER, he was an Assistant Professor in engineering at Lafayette College. At UMass, Dwayne also holds an Extension Professor position in the Department of Environmental Conservation. CEERE Awarded $2 Million for Role in New Clean Energy Extension

CEERE director Dr. Beka Kosanovic is one of the co-principal investigators for the new Clean Energy Extension, funded by a $6 million grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources. The program will provide information on clean energy technologies and resources to help put them into practice.

The U.S. Department of Energy has established the Northeast Combined Heat and Power Technical Assistance Partnership at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Pace University. The Center is a partnership between DOE, UMass, Pace, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources. Its mission is to support use of combined heat and power (CHP), also known as cogeneration, by providing technical education and assistance in the seven northeast states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. CEERE Receives $1.3 Million from DOE for Industrial Assessment Center

The campus will receive $1.3 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) over five years to help university teams gain practical training on core energy management concepts through DOE's Industrial Assessment Center Program. The Industrial Assessment Center on campus provides energy, waste, and productivity assessments to small and mid-sized manufacturers at no cost by experienced engineering faculty and students. In 2007, the DOE chose the UMass Amherst Industrial Assessment Center from among 26 similar IACs nationwide as its 2007 Center of Excellence, measured by energy and dollars saved and also the effort put forth by IAC Director Dragoljub “Beka” Kosanovic to promote ITP initiatives.
