This diverse group of cities and towns were designated as Green Communities in 2010 and 2011, the first two years of the program. Some had already implemented measures to reduce municipal energy consumption before the program began, while others got started with the support of Green Communities grants. As described in these case studies, the communities took varied approaches to reducing their energy consumption. These efforts resulted in annual energy cost savings ranging from $55,000 to $1.4 million.
More than three-quarters of the cities and towns in Massachusetts have been designated by DOER as Green Communities. For information on becoming a Green Community and qualifying for grants, see DOER's website. For information on the assistance we offer to cities and towns, visit our Municipal page.
