Science Building - Underground Details

This structure was quite interesting underground due to the sloping grade around the building. The designer chose to use concrete beams in many locations on the first floor due to the design loads.

The change in concrete column size was unusual. This feature was used to optimize floor space and used higher strength concrete in the lower sections. At the base of the columns it is typical to provide a separate concrete placement is boxed out from the rest of the floor to avoid cracking around the column.

In the lower level masonry detailing was shown in the walls used for animal enclosures. The utilities in this area were extensive and were the focus of a BIM "walkthrough" at the beginning of the tour.
