CEE434 Students toured the construction of a new wing of the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. This was one of the most informative tours we took from a geotechnical standpoint as it had a wide range of foundation types in the small footprint and close proximity of work to the operating hospital. Construction was complicated by a very constrained site with existing buildings, utilities and roadways, resulting in a project much more typical of an urban environment.

The steel and brace details are shown here. In the top left you can see the deeper members that are part of the moment frames. The right shows the girder moment connection and a pinned beam framing into the weak axis of the column with a shear extension tab. The bottom left shows typical pinned beam end framing of beams and girders. The bottom right show the brace and brace connection at the foundation, unusual in that there is no column at this location.
