Columns baseplates rested on very large footings that were then covered with soil leaving the pedestal exposed the thickness of the slab, or rested on boxouts in the foundation wall. In most sections the basement wall extended around the structure and supported the perimeter columns.
The floor slab was then cast as shown below left. The basement also had bracing in wide bays (center). The right photo shows the steel required for a raised elevator that does not extend into the basement.
