Henry
Petroski Duke University professor Henry Petroski's lecture was titled "To Engineer Is Human." Petroski is the author of the book To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design, and is the writer and presenter of a BBC-television documentary with the same name, which has been broadcast on PBS. The talk focused on the human dimension of engineering, including engineering triumphs and failures, and what we can expect of engineering in the future. Petroski has written nine other books, including The Pencil: A History of Design and Circumstance; The Evolution of Useful Things; and his latest book, Paperboy: Confessions of a Future Engineer, and he writes the engineering column for American Scientist. Among his honors are a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Ralph Coats Roe Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Civil Engineering History and Heritage Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers, and he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
