Problem Statement

The blindspot of a vehicle is a high-risk spot for drivers. It isn't an easily observable area and requires active monitering when changing lanes, especially in high-speed situations. Safety features, such as blindspot detection systems, can greatly reduce the potential risks, however they are only available in newer cars. Our project is an aftermarket blindspot detection system that can be attached to older cars.

System Specifications

• Powered through 12V cigarette-lighter outlet in vehicle
• Alert assembly attaches to the A-pillar of the car interior
• Visual alert indicates the side that contains a vehicle in the corresponding blindspot
• Accurately monitors blindspot within 5 meters of LiDAR sensor
• Functions properly in the nighttime
• Detects cars detecting the vehicle
• Considers the edge case of objects in the blindspot that are not vehicles (e.g. walls or guardrails)
• False positive rate below 15%, false negative rate below 5%
