Hi Folks,
It's true-- OIT is going to start supporting Linux. I wanted to pass
along my thanks for your help, advice, and suggestions along the way.
It's definitely made this addition a lot easier. This is a new service
for us, so we're going to expect some growing pains as we get started.
The OIT Help Desk is OIT's tier 1 triage area. We handle problems that
take less than 15 minutes to resolve. OIT Software Support takes care
of the more advanced problems, and we anticipate they'll be getting most
of the Linux-related stuff to start out.
Please let me know if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions!

A draft of the official announcement:
Beginning on January 29th, Help Services will begin offering Linux help
to faculty, staff, and students. We are excited to be supporting open
source initiatives and proactively meeting the changing needs of the
campus community. The university already has an active community of
Linux users and, starting in the Spring semester, they will also be able
to get Linux support from the OIT Help Desk and Software Support.
To start out, we will be offering support for a handful of Linux
distributions: Redhat Enterprise, Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and
Xubuntu. We also plan to support common applications and utilities like
Thunderbird, Open Office, and McAfee's Linux virus scanner, UVScan.
Check the OIT website in the upcoming days for the full list of
supported software.
