Welcome to the University of Massachusetts Supermileage Vehicle Competition Homepage. A project by the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Both the students and the advisors are very excited about the 2006 Competition.  This years team will be working hard to create the most fuel efficient engine and aerodynamic body possible in order to bring home first place.

News and Progress

November 15th 2005

This is the first update of the SMV website for the 2005-2006 team.  Our team has been split into 3 distinct groups and then the Commonwealth College R&D group.  The three main groups are the engine team, transmission team, and body team.  The R&D group members are working independently on special projects that we hope to implement in this years car but are not completely counting on, such as an energy storing flywheel and electronic fuel injection and camshafts.

Updates for the teams go as follows:

Transmission Team:

  • Have fabricated most of the cart for testing CVT and Fixed Gear Ratio transmission efficiencies

  • Have gotten HBM to donate two torque transducers and associated hardware.software

  • Working on calculations to predict the behavior of the CVT

Engine Team:

  • Redesign of dyno (conversion from single magnetic pickup to multi-pickup high
accuracy Hall Effect sensing RPM system

  • Brake Specific Fuel Consumption runs on a Tecomseh Snow King engine for
ballpark small displacement figures as well as Hp and Torque runs with the same engine

  • Disassembly, redesign, and rebuilding of last years dual overhead cam engine.

  • Fuel Injection R&D for stock and Keith's custom application

Body Team:

  • We eventually decided on aluminum 6061 rectangular tubing for the chassis material.

  • We have a preliminary front end design

  • Tested Aluminum honeycomb as a possible chassis material
