Finite Element Modeling and Analysis

Of Pressure vessel

- Sankar Nellian

The analysis of pressure vessel is of critical importance in nuclear industries. Though various theories are developed on the analysis of pressure vessel, design of hub, flange and bolt as per ASME Boiler and pressure vessel codes section 3 & section 8, the vessel is always overdesigned by taking higher safety factors.

This project focuses attention on the stress behavior of pressure vessel near the bolt hole, stresses in bolt, localized stress distribution due to preload and contact stress developed between flange to flange, flange to bolt.

The objectives of the project are as follows.
  1. To find out various stresses developed in the pressure vessel near the bolt hole due to internal pressure and preload
  2. To study the contact stress developed between flanges due to preload and pressure
  3. Make a parametric pressure vessel model to carry out stress analysis of pressure vessel of any dimensions.
