Automated Design Methodology

for Minimizing Warpage in Injection Molded Parts

Abstract -- This project dealt with an automated design methodology for reduction of warpage in injection molded parts by a combined implementation of the Complex method and Design of Experiment. The design space considered for optimization was divided into four distinct sub-design spaces: part, mold, machine setup and resin wherein each sub-design space contains its own set of design variables. The objective was quantified with the aid of commercial injection molding simulation software which provide an integrated analysis. This approach, which shifts the burden of the creative effort from the designer to the computer will reduce product development time as well as enhance quality.
