Overview of Industrial Engineering=20

According to The = Institute of=20 Industrial Engineers (IIE), Industrial Engineering is=20 "...concerned with the design, improvement, and = installation of=20 integrated systems of people, materials, equipment and = energy. It=20 draws upon specialized knowledge and skill in the = mathematical,=20 physical and the social science together with the = principles and=20 methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, = predict,=20 and evaluate the results to be obtained from such = systems."=20

In general, engineering has to do with the design = and=20 implementation of technology. While other branches of = engineering=20 emphasize design aspects of physical systems, industrial=20 engineering places equal weight on people, economics, and = systems=20 aspects of technology often neglected by other fields. In = addition=20 to the design of industrial engineering hardware and = industrial=20 environments, the industrial engineer is trained to design = the=20 administrative systems needed for the effective = implementation of=20 physical technology and to design the interface between = the=20 hardware and people.

In summary, industrial = engineering=20 has two particularly exciting attributes:


  • It applies to all types of industrial, commercial, = and=20 government activities.
  • It is concerned with people as well as with material = things.=20

Industrial engineers are prime sources = of=20 management talent because they combine the aptitude of the = engineer, applied mathematician, accountant, and business=20 executive. A prospective IE/OR student should be = interested in=20 people and in the machines of industry, but above all, = have an=20 interest in creatively solving problems. This ability to = solve=20 problems includes defining the problem, gathering data, = selecting=20 and implementing the best solution, and evaluating. = Industrial=20 engineers must be able to express ideas in a clear, = concise=20 manner, both orally and in writing.=20
