Stephen Malkin

Distinguished Professor

Education:

  • B.S., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1963
  • M.S., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1965
  • Sc.D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1968

Research Interests:

Professor Malkin’s research interests are in machining, manufacturing, and tribology, with specialization in grinding and abrasive processes for metallic and ceramic materials. The overall objectives include: fundamental research on the science and technology of grinding and abrasive processing of materials, practical application of grinding fundamentals to enhance productivity and part quality, and solution of industrial grinding problems. The scope of the research includes investigation of grinding mechanisms, heat transfer and thermal damage, process modeling, optimization , and control methodologies. Current and recent research topics are concerned with adaptive intelligent control of grinding cycles, optimization methodologies, simulation of grinding processes, fine abrasive finishing processes, grinding of ceramics, environmentally conscious grinding fluids, grinding with electroplated wheeels, and development of an intelligent sensor-integrated grinding wheel.
