Lawrence L. Ambs

Professor
Director, Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

Education

  • B.S., University of Minnesota, 1960
  • M.S., University of Minnesota, 1963
  • Ph.D., University of Minnesota, 1968

Research Interests:

Major research interests of Professor Ambs are in the area of applied thermodynamics and energy conversion with particular emphasis on building systems, thermal power generation and industrial thermal processes. Recent projects have involved identifying operational strategies to minimize energy use of industrial equipment such as fluid chillers, cooling tower systems and injection molding machines. Additional research interests include gas turbine combustion and mixing problems, gas turbine steam cycle analysis and cogeneration process and economics.

Professor Ambs is the director of the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (CEERE) in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department. Within CEERE, the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC), supported by the US Department of Energy, provides New England industry with technical assistance in identifying and reducing energy use, operational waste and productivity barriers in their manufacturing operations. Other activities in CEERE include, Massachusetts Division of Energy Resources funding to support energy related technical assessment for the Massachusetts Strategic Envirotechnology Partnership (STEP) and support for the US DOE Industries of the Future program in Massachusetts.

United Technologies Corporation Outstanding Teaching Award, 1990
