Chapter History

The University of Massachusetts Amherst Student Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers was chartered in 1990 by the New England Section of ITE. In the 20 years of organization, the Student Chapter has advanced to become one of international recognition.

In the spring of 2000, the UMass Amherst Student Chapter of ITE began a spring event entitled "Technical Day." Organized as a New England Section event, Technical Day aimed at bringing together professionals and students across New England. 2010 will mark the 11th Annual Technical Day and is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about ITE, transportation engineering, or the civil engienering profession as a whole.

In 2005, the Student Chapter began to present awards in connection to service with the chapter. These awards included the Student Service Award and the Distinguished Alumni Award. Two years later, the Chapter commissioned the Jane Garvey Transportation Leadership Award.

In August 2009, the UMass Amherst Student Chapter was selected as the International Outstanding Student Chapter. This was the first time that this award had been bestowed upon the chapter. The Student Chapter has also been recognized with the Northeastern District (formerly District 1) Student Chapter for 10 consecutive years, from 2000 - 2009.

2010 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Student Chapter Charter and the Chapter entends to celebrate the occasion with chapter eventts centered around bringing back alumni of the ITE Student Chapter and of the university as a whole.
