District 1 Annual Meeting

Student members and faculty advisor, Mike Knodler, attended the District 1 Annual Meeting in Providence RI May 9th-11th.  Students took part in the welcome reception, 5 speaker sessions, the Traffic Bowl, and banquet.  The Taffic Bwl competition was won by the student team made up of 2 current UMass students, a UMass Alumni, and a Northeastern student; they beat out the 3 other teams of professionals!  At the banquet, the Chapter was awarded the Outstanding Student Chapter award and Heather Rothenberg received the Outstanding Student Paper award.


2007 BSCES Berger Seminar

The 2007 Bertram Berger Seminar, held on May 3rd,  was sponsored by the Boston Society of Civil Engineers (BSCES).  The program featured a panel of experts who examined the conditions at the Commonwealth's ports and plans for future development.   It was another great networking opportunity for the chapter members to get to know the BSCES professionals.

 


Spring Roller Skating Social

On April 10, 2007, chapter members & friends gathered at Interskate-91 for a mid-semester social.  Roller skating, laser tag, arcade games, pizza & cake were enjoyed by all.  It was a great night of "old school" fun and the chapter hopes to have more events like this in the future.

MAITE Student Research Symposium

On February 9, 2007, the Massachusetts Chapter of ITE held its annual Student Research Symposium in Boston, MA.  This year, the event was sponsored by the University of Massachusetts.  Nine members of the UMass Amherst ITE Student Chapter presented their research and prepared posters on topics ranging from congestion to emergency evacuation modeling.  Students also participated in the job fair and the opportunity to network with transportation professionals.


IIHS Field Trip

On January 25, members of the UMass Amherst ITE Student Chapter visited the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Vehicle Research Center in Ruckersville, Virginia.  In addition to touring the facility and learning more about the crash tests conducted by IIHS, they were given the opportunity to observe a 40 mph 40% offset front end crash test of a 2007 Ford Edge.  Students also watched a simulated 20 mph rear impact test of a seat from a 2007 Ford Edge to test the effectiveness of the seat and headrest in reducing the effect of a rear impact collision.  


 

2007 ITE Student Reception

On January 22, student chapter members attended the 2007 ITE Student Reception held at ITE Headquarters in Washington, DC.  Students met with students from other chapters as well as ITE International Officers and staff.  As part of the evening, students also heard from officers on employment options and ITE activities. 

 

 


 

Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting

Student chapter members attended the 2007 TRB Annual Meeting in Washington, DC from January 21-24.  Students had the opportunity to attend presentation and poster sessions, as well as to meet with potential employers and other students.  With more than 11,000 attendees this year, students had the chance to  meet professionals from a variety of transportation disciplines. 

  


 

NEITE Annual Meeting

The NEITE Annual Meeting was held on December 4 in Warwick, RI.  Members of the student chapter attended the day’s events including technical presentations, a social hour and dinner. 

  

  

 

    


 

UPS Distribution Center Field Trip

Members of the Student Chapter visited the West Springfield UPS Distribution Center on November 10, 2006.  Students were invited to the facility to watch the morning departure of 140 package carrying trucks in a roughly 15 minute window. 

 

 

 


Intramural Volleyball

During the Fall 2006 semester, members of the Student Chapter formed a team to participate in the UMass intramural volleyball league.  The student chapter covered the costs for members to play.  As part of the “Just for Fun” league, the team included seasoned pros and first-timers.  The team even qualified for playoffs! 

 


Potluck at Dr. Knodler's House

ITE Student Chapter Advisor, Dr. Mike Knodler, hosted a potluck dinner at his home on October 19.  This event gave students the chance to socialize with each other as well as faculty and UMass Transportation Center staff.  It was also an opportunity for students to show off their culinary skills.

 

   


2006 BSCES Berger Seminar/Lunch

The 2006 Bertram Berger Seminar and Luncheon, held on September 28,  was sponsored by the Boston Society of Civil Engineers (BSCES).  The program featured a panel of experts who examined transportation planning in the Commonwealth and discussed projects proposed for development.  Speakers included representatives from Amtrak,  Massport, Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, Massachusetts Congress and municipal government.   


MA ITE/NEITE Joint Section Meeting

Members of the ITE Student Chapter attended the MA ITE/NEITE Joint Meeting in Waltham, MA on September 19.  The Chapter President and Faculty Advisor attended the Board Meeting and everyone attended the technical session, social hour, and dinner with keynote speaker, Anne Collins, MA Registrar of Motor Vehicles.  It was an excellent opportunity to meet ITE members from across Massachusetts and New England.
