Structural Engineering and Mechanics
The members of the Structural Engineering and Mechanics (SEM) group perform research to improve the performance of civil structures (bridges and buildings), and to further the understanding of the mechanical behavior of solids. Our research consists of experiments conducted in the Gunness Structural Engineering Laboratory and in the field, and computational and analytic work conducted with the aid of computational facilites maintained by the group and the college.
Both Master's and Doctoral degrees are awarded by SEM, and a variety of graduate courses are offered in support of these degree programs. The course offerings have significant depth and breadth in design of concrete and steel structures, supported by offerings in analytical and numerical structural mechanics. For more information about the SEM graduate degree programs, consult the SEM Admissions, Degree Programs, Research Program and Research Facilities pages. For more information about the SEM group, please consult pages on the individual faculty.
