Graduate Studies in Civil & Environmental Engineering
The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department (CEE) at the UMass Amherst College of Engineering awards M.S. and Ph.D. degrees with programs of study in four specialized disciplines, or Program Areas:
Students apply to the UMass Graduate School (www.umass.edu/gradschool/prospects.html) for admission, and indicate the specific Program Area and degree program (MS or PhD) to which they are applying.
General application requirements are available, and there may also be specific Program Area requirements.
Admission and Funding
Applications received via the UMass Graduate School are reviewed by CEE Program Area faculty and admission decisions are communicated to applicants by the Graduate School. All applicants are considered for financial aid in the form of research or teaching assistantships; no special forms are required.
Approximately 75 graduate students currently are seeking degrees in the Department. It is the goal of the Department to provide assistantships to all graduate students whose degree will culminate in the completion of a research project (CEE689), thesis (CEE699) or dissertation (CEE899), and every effort will be made to provide funding for those involved with specific projects. Though limited in number, teaching assistant positions may be provided for those either interested in teaching as a career, or for individuals involved in research projects that -- for a variety of reasons-- do not have funding. Typically, tuition waivers are part of the assistantship contract. Funding is not provided for those students whose degree will culminate in the completion of CEE 679, Engineering Report.
Employment
M.S. and Ph.D. graduates have gained employment in a variety of areas. In general, persons receiving an M.S. degree have been employed by consulting engineering firms and federal, state, and local governments. Most Ph.D. graduates are employed by private research firms, academic institutions, or consulting engineering companies.
