Research in Civil & Environmental Engineering

The CEE Department is involved in a wide range of research activities organized around four main areas:

Research activities involve faculty, graduate students, and staff in field, laboratory, and computational based projects.

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, faculty offices, and some graduate student offices, are located in Marston Hall. Additional laboratory space and graduate student offices are located in Gunness Laboratory and the new Engineering Lab II (Elab II).  Laboratories include several controlled environment rooms for use in environmental and geotechnical research, instrumentation rooms and instructional and individual student lab space.

The College of Engineering has several public access rooms with personal computers networked to College and University resources as well as the Internet. The CEE Department has several rooms equipped with computers networked to local area networks for specific instructional and research needs. Graduate student offices are equipped with hardwired and wireless access to College and University networks. In general, campus-wide there are numerous areas with wireless access to the University network.

Shop facilities are available in the College of Engineering to fabricate a wide variety of experimental apparatus for research and instruction. These facilities include a machine shop, a woodworking shop, a metal and welding shop, and electronics design and fabrication equipment. In addition, the Department has two full-time technicians available to support research efforts.

The Sciences Library is the University's principal repository for books, periodicals and other reference materials pertaining to engineering and the physical sciences. The library's collection includes materials in the following subjects: astronomy, chemistry, computer science, food science, mathematics and statistics, physics, polymer science, wood technology, and all areas of engineering. The library's holdings include approximately 160,000 books and bound periodicals. There are also approximately 1,500 current subscriptions to journals in the subject fields served by the library. A large collection of technical reports of government-sponsored research is also maintained.
