Prospective Engineering Students

First-year engineering majors entering UMass Amherst in the fall 2009:

There are a limited number of merit scholarships offered to the top applicants in the class of 2013. Selection for these scholarships is based on your application to UMass Amherst (i.e. high school transcript, SAT scores, class rank, essay, etc.). There is no separate application to submit. For more information, please visit: http://www.umass.edu/admissions/scholarships/

Deadline to Submit a 2009/10 Scholarship Application is February 6, 2009

Currently Enrolled Engineering Majors

Currently enrolled freshman, sophomore and junior engineering majors may apply annually for the scholarships listed below by following the application process described next.

Scholarship Application: Long Answer & Essay Form

If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please follow the instructions below. You must complete all three steps.  Incomplete applications are usually not considered.

  1. Complete online questionnaire. Click here to take the survey
  2. Download and electronically complete the “Long Answer & Essay Form”
  3. Submit the “Long Answer & Essay Form” as an email attachment to scholarships@ecs.umass.edu

If you have trouble using the online questionnaire or downloading Long Answer & Essay Form please contact Heather Demers at demers@ecs.umass.edu.

Please note: the scholarship application process will only be done once a year. Therefore, it is very important that you complete your application by February 6 to be eligible for any scholarships for fall (2009) and spring semester (2010).

Fast Facts

  • The selections are made by a Faculty Scholarship Committee.
  • The awards come from a variety of sources within the College and vary annually based on available resources.
  • This one application makes you eligible for the hundreds of scholarships the college awards each year.
  • Students who are currently freshman (but will be sophomores in Fall ‘09) are eligible to apply, as are current sophomores and juniors.
  • Different awards vary in their eligibility criteria. In general, academic performance (2.5 GPA or higher), financial need, and activities are the primary criteria for full-time students majoring in engineering.  Some scholarships may be tied to internships with companies.

What Happens After You Apply

  • Applications are reviewed – matched to criteria from donor.
  • May be asked to interview for scholarships tied to internships.
  • Scholarship committee, with representatives for each department, meets in early March to select recipients.
  • Notification emails are sent in early May.
  • If asked, you are required to complete a thank you letter for your scholarship donor and submit electronically to the Office of Development.  Scholarships will be revoked if thank you letters are not received in a timely fashion.
  • Credit will be applied to your university bill (half fall semester and half spring semester) and will appear as an engineering scholarship.
  • Scholarships may be affected if you plan to graduate at the end of the fall semester, decide to change your curriculum, or chose to work a co-op.
  • If other scholarships become available though the Scholarship Committee during the 2009/10 academic year, you will be considered and notified if you are selected.
