Irregular Object Dimensioning SystemTeam Members: Team Faculty Advisor: Professor
Anderson Project SummaryA FedEx sort tunnel reads an average of three packages per
second. The tunnel determines the
dimensions of the box by taking pictures from all six sides and decodes the
barcodes on the object to then send the data to the control system for
further sorting. The dimensioning must be done as the object passes while being relatively accurate. Currently, the dimensioning is done through laser measuring heads. This system has about a half of an inch accuracy margin, which is not great but meets the minimum requirement. The system runs into a problem when it is presented with an irregularly shaped object and tries to give it a relatively precise length, width, and height.
