Mid-course Design Review (MDR) Specification

Team Yngvesson will have completed the first phase of the project:

  • Measured I V curves for multiple devices; one device will be initially chosen for the project.
  • Experimentation with modulated CO2 LASER – pulses from helium cooled device observed on oscilloscope and recorded.
  • Have working amplifier circuit with basic digital output.

Necessary method to complete first phase:

  • Measured I V curves:
    • Various samples of Niobium Nitride in different pattern configurations will be tested to achieve I V characteristics.
  • Experiment with modulated CO2 LASER:

o       The LASER beam will be acoustically modulated over a frequency range up to 100 kHz and directed to a sample in a helium dewar at 4°K.

o       The resultant voltage or current modulation on the detector will be observed and recorded from the oscilloscope as the frequency is varied up to 100 kHz.

·        Working amplifier circuit:

o       A functioning amplifier circuit will be constructed to monitor the detector.

o       A basic digital numeric output will be implicated in the amplifier circuit to provide digital values for acquired data.

Clarifying example:

  • The best device is selected from a range of tested devices.
  • A pulsed LASER beam is applied to the super-cooled device.
  • The pulse will be “read” across the detector with the amplifier circuit.
  • The output will be the oscilloscope.
