This project is part of the 2004-2005 Senior Design Project program in the ECE program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Our team consists of David Breton, Nicholas Buckminster, and Michael Leuchtenburg.
We have decided to build an x-band radar system to complement an s-band radar used to examine convection currents in the atmosphere. The current system, consisting of an FMCW S-band radar, can see air moving around in the atmosphere.
Unfortunately, it can also see bugs, raindrops, and other so-called "point scatterer" objects. The X-band system which we are building will, when completed, be able to see these point scatterers very well, and the convection currents to a much lesser extent. This will allow us to subtract out the interference from the point scatterers, leaving only the convection current data behind.
