• Hardware and software failure rates
• System architecture - memory organization (e.g., shared vs. distributed), architecture of the processors (e.g., cache), architecture and protocol used on the communication network
• Size of system (e.g., number of processors, buses, etc.)
• Task assignment and scheduling algorithms
• Recovery algorithm employed
