Reliability Model

Reliability is the probability that the computer meets all hard deadlines of critical tasks over the mission period.

A hard deadline can be missed due to:

  • Insufficient system capacity
  • Failure to recover quickly enough from a fault
  • System crash

The operating environment influences:

  • Permanent failure rate
  • Transient failure rate and duration
  • Extent of transient failure correlation

The model can be used to:

  • Find good system configurations
  • Study tradeoffs between processor and time redundancy
  • Assess recovery procedures
