This is a picture of the USS Paddle (SS-263), the submarine that my father was on in World War II, just after a torpedo attack on a Japanese convoy in the late afternoon of September 7, 1944, in the vicinity of Sindangan Bay, Mindanao, the Philippines. The Paddle fired torpedoes at the tanker, Eiyo Maru, which later ran aground. Torpedoes also hit and sunk the freighter, Shinyo Maru. (This is a reproduction of a painting based the ship's log - the Paddle was actually submerged during and after the attack.)
