A Chippendale Mirror


I made this Chippendale mirror frame around 1988. Plans were from Reproducing Antique Furniture, by F. H. Gottshall, 1971. Mirrors very similar in style can be seen in Old Deerfield. The wood is mahogany, with all pieces resawn from a single slab. The only tricky part to this project was carving the corner blocks on the top - it can't be seen from the photo, but the moldings on the sides and top curve at the corners to form small cusps. These were formed with some small carving tools and scrapers made from an old hacksaw blade. The corner joints are miters with splines
