DP123 represents a major opportunity for you to add practical experience to your brain and your résumé. All DP123 participants will be enrolled in one of the following graded 1-credit courses: ECE 197DP (for frosh), 297DP (for sophomores), 397DP (for juniors), or 497DP (for seniors - DP123 mentors). Seniors will act as DP123 mentors, not regular team members. Enrollment capacity is limited. DP123 is a highly collaborative, non-competitive environment. First and second year students are not expected to have electronics background. Learn on the job! Any Five College student may apply but priority will be given to ENGIN pre-CSE, ENGIN pre-EE, CSE and EE students. You may check out as many projects as you like but, in the end, you will be enrolled in no more than one project.
MONDAYS >> ECE ROBOTS: Emma5 and Proteus5 << This group meets every Monday, 2:30 - 5:30, at M5 and will be continuing to design and build M5's two mobile robots: Emma5 and Proteus5. This is a great opportunity to get involved in robot design. Emma5 is a mobile robot built on a modified wheelchair platform. She was started in September 2009. The Mission Control workstation (aka Houston) is in development as well. The Houston-Emma5 link is currently via WiFi. Proteus5 was started in January 2010 will also be controlled by Houston. The Monday instructor is Ric Zannoni, a Ph.D. student in ECE with many years of industrial design experience.
TUESDAY FEEAT - Free Electrons Experimenting in Art and Technology << This group meets every Tuesday, 2:30 - 5:30, at M5 and will be designing and building systems for use by UMass student theater productions. We will be working with the Department of Theater's Prof. Michael Cottom. He has over 30 years of experience in theater technology. Some of the Tuesday students will be focused on creating a performance space within M5 - concentrating on lighting and sound design. The Tuesday instructor is Prof. Soules, a member of the M5 faculty steering committee.
WEDNESDAYS >> Blank Slate!!! << The Wednesday instructor is Ric Zannoni, a Ph.D. student in ECE with many years of industrial design experience. This group meets every Thursday, 2:30 - 5:30, at M5 and will be designing and building something wonderful... but the project specifics are yet to be determined so stop by and join the conversation.
THURSDAY FEEAT - Free Electrons Experimenting in Art and Technology << This group meets every Thursday, 2:30 - 5:30, at M5 and will be designing and building Klaiber2, that is, version two of the Drum Machine/Music Synthesizer designed by polymath ECE senior Sean Klaiber. This project is a great opportunity for those interested in music, electronic music and audio engineering. The Thursday instructor is Prof. Soules, a member of the M5 faculty steering committee. The Klaiber2 will be used in Community Service Learning opportunities here in the Pioneer Valley.
