INFORMATION SYSTEMS LABORATORY

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
University of Massachusetts Amherst

The Information Systems Laboratory is supervised by Professor Patrick Kelly. Research activities in the laboratory are focused on the development of statistical and physical models for various imaging techniques; the design of optimal or near-optimal algorithms for reconstructing image features from noisy, blurred or otherwise corrupted image data; information fusion for image processing and system modeling; video coding and data compression; neural networks for system modeling and optimization; and signal detection and estimation. The laboratory's research has been sponsored by grants from the Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, and General Electric. In the last ten years the research has resulted in over 25 journal articles, 4 book chapters, and 55 refereed and published conference papers.

Current Research Topics:

  • Information fusion techniques for iterated image estimation, image model updating, and knowledge-aided system modeling.

  • Restoration, segmentation and boundary detection algorithms with application to radar and medical images.

  • Data compression algorithms for image, video and multimedia applications.

  • Wavelet designs and representations for cyclostationary speech and image signals.

  • Optimization algorithms and neural networks with applications to image estimation.
