Graphing techniques: the good, the bad and the ugly...

If your problem solution includes a graph, e.g. voltage vs. time, don't forget the following essential characteristics of a good graph:

  • The graph must have a title - usually a simple title is best.
  • Both x and y axes must be properly labeled with labels and units (e.g. time (s), voltage (V)
  • Make sure the axes are scaled appropriately, with convenient major and minor tickmarks
  • If there is more than one plot on a single graph, make sure both curves are clearly labeled
  • If the graph is computer generated, don't let the computer graphing format violate the above rules. If necessary, hand annotate the graph to make sure it follows the rules.
