Narrative biography

Keith R. Carver joined UMass in 1984 as Professor and Head of the ECE Department. He served for eight years as ECE Department Head and from 1991 - 1993 was Acting Dean of Engineering.

Dr. Carver received the PhD and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1967 and 1963 from The Ohio State University, and the BSEE degree from the University of Kentucky in 1962.

From 1967 - 1969 he was on the EE faculty at the University Kentucky and from 1969 - 1984 was on the ECE faculty at New Mexico State University. He was with NASA Headquarters from 1981 - 1983 where he was Microwave Remote Sensing Program Manager, and also a Member of the Technical Staff of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. From 1995 - 1996 he was Visiting Scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. His research interests have been in antennas, microwave remote sensing and microwave engineering. He has published in the areas of printed circuit antennas, microwave remote sensing techniques, antenna calibration metrology, and applied electromagnetics. He is coauthor with J. D. Kraus of a textbook on "Electromagnetics" (2/e) and of several reference book chapters.

He served as President of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) in 1983 and was a Distinguished Lecturer (1981 - 82) of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S). He has served on the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the IEEE, and as Chairman (1985 - 1988) of the IEEE AP-S Distinguished Lecture Program. He has served on numerous NASA Science Working Groups, and was Chair of the SAR Science Working Groups for SIR-B and SIR-C and EOS. He has also served on various Advisory Boards for the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and the Army Research Office.

He has also been active in electrical engineering education at the national level, having served as Chair of the National Electrical Engineering Department Heads Association (NEEDHA) from 1991-1992, and on the NEEDHA Board of Directors. He has served as an ABET Reviewer.

Dr. Carver is a Fellow of the IEEE (1986), an Honorary Life Member of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, and a recipient of the NASA Public Service Award, the IEEE Centennial Award, and the Outstanding Service Award of the IEEE GRSS. He has received several teaching awards, including the 1999 Outstanding Teacher Award of the College of Engineering at UMass.

His current research interests are in printed circuit antennas and waveguide slot arrays for microwave remote sensing. At UMass he teaches courses on microwave engineering, electromagnetics, antennas and circuit theory.
