Abstract
The closed-loop rate-based flow control was adopted to support
Available Bit Rate (ABR) service in ATM networks, where the
transmission rate of each ABR connection is adjusted based on the
network feedback information. In this paper, we present an overview of
two rate-based control mechanisms : Binary and Explicit Rate. Then, we
address the issues of end-to-end traffic management in IP/ATM
internetworks, where legacy networks (e.g., Ethernet) are
interconnected with ATM networks. We discuss the impact of the ATM flow
control mechanisms on the end-to-end performance and implementation
requirements at ATM switches and edge devices (e.g., an router
interface) in the internetworking environment.
