Abstract

This paper describes a prototype of a Multimedia Wireless (MWLAN) LAN which is currently being developed by the Multimedia Wireless LAN Laboratory at University of Massachusetts at Amherst and AIM Engineering Inc.

In addition to being a tool for research and a proof-of-concept demonstration, the MWLAN prototype is intended to investigate and optimize the design of major components needed to support multimedia traffic in WLANs. In our first generation prototype our focus was to master the end-to-end communication from one application to another in a wireless LAN environment so that we will be able to provide adequate proven solutions. We focused on the definition and validation of key protocols and software components including:

  1. physical layer: the control of the spread spectrum modem chip, control of the radio front end,
  2. media access control
  3. virtual device drivers development
