Abstract

In this article, we consider multimedia applications of ATM networks. ATM networks support QoS (Quality of Service) guarantees so that real time connections can be maintained without abrupt changes or disconnections. We present two situations where the specifications of the Connection Admission Control (CAC) algorithm by applications may be beneficial: ATM API (Application Programming Interface) and Multimedia API. The ATM API provides an interface specification for accesses to the native ATM services. The Multimedia API is a higher layer interface attempting to aid the programming for applications dealing with multiple types of media and multicast connections.
