Taking advantage of our internationally recognized work in conceptual process design, we now aim to develop improved strategies for the design of formulated chemical products. In a departure from the traditional sequential design approach, our methodology involves the simultaneous design of the product formulation and the manufacturing process. This integrated approach will require the development of physical property estimation methods and conceptual design strategies for complex (often multi-phase) chemical mixtures. Our initial work will focus on two diverse applications areas: (1) home and personal care consumer products; and (2) emulsions for drug delivery of pharmaceuticals. Despite their obvious differences, these structured products share common features including the strong interactions between the chemical formulation and the processing conditions on the final product properties. The knowledge gained from the process design work will be utilized to develop integrated process sensing and control strategies for real-time control of final product properties.
