CEE434 Students toured the Renovation of the Student Union Building. This was a very interesting structure, showcasing unusual features of the existing structure as well as the new construction in the auditorium area.
The existing structure included details that are no longer used in steel buildings, such as a patented floor system that used fabric as formwork, supported by closely spaced joists. This resulted in varaible floor thickness throughout the existing building.
The existing steel also required lead paint abatement and included a variety of connection types included seated beam connections and steel encased in concrete for fireproofing. This required significant demolition and modifications to existing steel and coordination to connect the new steel to the existing structure.
