CEE434 Students toured the construction for the new Recreation Center at UMass. The tour was arranged by a UMass Alumni who was one of the Structural Engineers on the project. In addition, the General Contractor was also a UMass CEE alumn.
Here are some general views of the tour

Next an
overview of the structure (looking West).
Note the
braced frames at the left and center bays, and the 3-D truss members at the
roof level.

Interior Views
– note the hanger supports for the running track overlooking the basketball
courts.
Metal decking
will support the concrete slabs. 3-D trusses at the top of the right photo. Also
note that the basketball courts (bottom of right photo) are partially supported
on grade and partially on metal deck.
.jpg)
An unusual
connection – this is a “pin” end for the 3-D trusses (truss spans to left)
Note the
splice in the girder and the odd “cap” on the column that the “pin” sits on.

The building
cladding at the 1st floor is shown in this mock-up section (close up
at right)
Brick cladding
is tied back to cold formed steel sections. Blue layer is insulation. Note that
the tie-backs restrain out of plane movement by embedment in the grout, and the
air gap to allow for air circulation to prevent mold and water damage.
Structural wall is the masonry block – all other components “hang” from this or
are supported directly at ground level.
