The
city of Gardenia, NJ needs your help.
They would like to develop a new groundwater source. Like many groundwaters
this one has high levels of iron. They
have proposed a small treatment system using fine bubble aeration.
a. If they design this
groundwater source to provide a maximum of 3 MGD, how much air would need to be
supplied? (in mg/L and m3/h)
b. How large would the
contactor have to be if they wished to remove iron down to 15% of its initial
concentration? (in m3). Assume that the dissolved oxygen level
reaches saturation (10 mg/L) very rapidly in the contactor. Also assume that the water temperature is
20ēC.
State
any additional assumptions. Feel free to
consult any water chemistry references (e.g., Stumm
& Morgan; Snoeyink & Jenkins), or any other
literature that you feel would be of help.
