Welcome to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering! We offer bachelors (BS), masters (MS) and doctoral (PhD) degrees in Civil Engineering and a masters degree (MS) in Environmental Engineering. The BS in Civil Engineering and MS in Environmental Engineering degree programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET1. BS CE students are prepared in four areas of concentration within which the CEE graduate level degree programs are organized: Environmental Engineering: boasts an international reputation in water quality research, with a graduate program annually ranked near the top 30 programs in the nation and state-of-the-art (2004) research facilities in the $25-million Engineering Laboratory II building Geotechnical Engineering: operates one of the top 15 geotechnical research areas in the country and maintains a National Geotechnical Experimentation Site, one of only six nationwide, while also benefitting from the Engineering Laboratory II facility Structural Engineering: does nationally recognized research in the design and upgrade of safe highways, bridges, and buildings, and features a newly refurbished Structural Engineering Laboratory Transportation Engineering: runs the UMass Amherst Transportation Center, one of 22 federally designated Tier II transportation centers, and operates a Human Performance Lab with a driving simulator and a fully instrumented vehicle. The 21 faculty members teach and conduct research in a CEE Department with an enrollment of more than 250 undergraduate and 75 graduate students, with typically small (10 to 30) class size that affords an excellent learning environment.
