What's New in Engineering?

Whiz Kids Compete for Big Jackpot The finals of the UMass Amherst Technology Innovation Challenge (TIC) – a hotly contested competition on May 8 from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. in Campus Center Room 1009 – will give away the kind of cash usually won from a TV quiz show, will feature the sort of gadgetry normally found at an inventor’s expo, and will work up to the type of drama seen when announcing Oscars or Grammies. The judges for the TIC will not only award $80,000 in prize money for the best entrepreneurial plan involving hot new technologies conceived on campus, but five teams of UMass Amherst students, faculty, and alumni will give lively and entertaining presentations of their new businesses. Diversity Office Holds Awards Reception The Diversity Programs Office is proud to host its annual Multicultural Engineering Program and Women in Engineering Program Awards Reception on May 9th from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Reading Room of the Campus Center. This year, 10 women have been honored with the Outstanding Women in Engineering Award, three students will receive the Outstanding Senior MEP Award, two will be honored for their academic excellence within the College of Engineering, and five engineering students will be honored with a leadership award. In addition, students will have the opportunity to network with members from our Industrial Advisory Council. Brown Awarded Chancellor's Citation Gregory W. Brown, the Director of Recruitment and Transfer Programs at the College of Engineering,  will be one of 11 UMass Amherst staff members who will be honored with Chancellor’s Citations. The annual Chancellor's Citation Award recognizes and honors employees who have demonstrated exemplary and outstanding service to the university in one or more of the following ways: original contributions; attainment of high-priority objectives; service "beyond the call of duty"; significant improvements in productivity and/or operational savings. Individuals are nominated by a supervisor, peers, professional colleagues, or others familiar with the person's work. Interim Chancellor Thomas W. Cole, Jr. will recognize 10 student employees and 11 staff members for their outstanding contributions at a reception to be held mid-May.
